Porter Olsen is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Maryland studying born-digital and hybrid literary collections under the direction of Matthew Kirschenbaum. Porter was a member of the original BitCurator team serving first as a graduate assistant and then as the BitCurator community lead from 2013 to 2014. In that capacity Porter developed both online and in-person workshops on the application of digital forensics tools to digital preservation practices. He has subsequently taught digital forensics and BitCurator workshops at a wide range of collecting institutions, including Ivy League universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, and at national libraries including the U.S. Library of Congress, the British Library, and the National Library of Sweden. Porter has an MA from the University of Utah in English literature. Before returning to graduate school he worked in IT as a product manager for a Linux operating system developer.
