SAA Museum Archives Section Standards and Best Practices Working Group Symposium

The Museum Archives Section Standards and Best Practices Working Group is holding a half-day symposium on museum archives and electronic records at this year’s SAA Annual Meeting. The symposium will feature three case studies, five lightning round speakers, discussion, and plenty of time for questions.

Following the ERS business meeting, we host a mini-un-conference. Proposals will be accepted online before the meeting starts via the ERS website (http://www2.archivists.org/groups/electronic-records-section). SAA Acquisitions and Appraisal Section
Following our business meeting, join us for a panel discussion on acquisition and appraisal of electronic records. Archivists and other electronic records specialists discuss strategies for appraising and acquiring electronic/born-digital records and share their experiences with ingest and forensics tools, website capture, working with donors, and developing polices for management and acquisition of electronic records.

SAA Preservation Section
The Preservation Section’s short business meeting is followed by information concerning the Survey of Preservation Statistics by Holly Robertson.  The main program is a panel discussing trends and innovations in the preservation of AV Materials. Panelists include Robert Horton (IMLS) and Joel Wurl (NEH), who briefly discuss grant programs supporting preservation and the projects featured on the panel; Bill Veillette (NEDCC) discussing IRENE funded by both NEH and IMLS ( http://www.nedcc.org/eblasts/2013IRENE.html); Karen Cariani (WGBH) discussing trends in preserving modern video/film related to an NEH grant to WGBH; and Carl Fleischauer (Library of Congress) discussing preservation of sound recordings, the FADGI program, and Sound Directions. A short question and answer session follows.

Join us for "Consolidating, Downsizing, and Renegotiating Relationships: Feats of Archival Agility in Religious Repositories." Religious repositories have found successful methods of becoming more agile when faced with diminishing resources from parent organizations. While the presentations will be from archivists working in religious repositories, these are issues all archivists face today.

SAA Manuscript Repositories Section
The section continues its exploration of born-digital records with a lightning round of reports by Jump In, Too/Two participants, updates from Jump In (2013) alumni, and Q&A. In the second half, Megan Mc- Shea presents on the Archives of American Art's developing approach to processing media-rich manuscript collections that aims to keep audiovisual records from becoming a hidden backlog.
